The cabinets of birch ply and laminate line a single wall under the window with a slight return spanning the join with the oven and hob set at 45 degrees to keep what is the main work area of the kitchen open and flexible. The integrated extractor unit above mirrors the return of the base units providing lighting for this work area.

The kitchen was designed to provide the client with a flexible space to be used as a family kitchen and also as a dining area. The dining area was painted with a contrasting coloured wall panel that draws the eye to this end of the kitchen creating a warmer feel to the fairly subdued colour scheme of the kitchen area. The natural linoleum flooring unifies the two spaces creating a warm but durable finish for both the kitchen and dining areas. The door through to the garage is horizontally veneered to give it a slightly different character to the oak paneling of the kitchen area.

The cabinets are all faced with a sprayed solid colour lacquer finish with bespoke curved solid oak handles tying in the outer oak paneling that frames all the units. The Oak sub top has a thin quartz top with an integral upstand along the back wall with the sink and glass domino hobs set in to this surface, providing a low maintenance durable work area for the kitchen, one of the clients key design goals.

A large pantry unit was created in an existing alcove area where a boiler had previously been installed in order to provide a large amount of storage space for what is a relatively small kitchen area, without it visually dominating the room. The smaller oak faced cabinet next to it was created in the old chimney area to provide storage more relating to the dining area, for glassware and crockery.

The pantry unit is faced with a pair of bi-fold sliding doors that allow the unit to be used without greatly impacting the user’s movements around the kitchen. The base of the unit has a set of graduated drawers to accommodate various cooking utensils and crockery with a central work area to house the toaster which is illuminated on the opening of the doors with a discreet LED strip light set into the underside of the shelf above. The shelving then provides a large amount of food storage.

The small recessed oak cabinet is set flush into an existing chimney recess and provides storage for glasses and crockery relating more to the adjacent dining area. It is faced with a pair of horizontally veneered touch release flush Oak doors which tie in with the door leading to the garage and soften the verticals on these two sides of the room to counter the stronger horizontal character of the kitchen area opposite.
